Gov. Jim Justice wants to open West Virginia classrooms in two weeks even as coronavirus spreads, but teachers unions are pushing back with a focus on local school systems.

“We’re working with our locals so that each county can come up with a plan to modify whatever fits their county,” said Dale Lee, president of the West Virginia Education Association. “Each county has the responsibility.”

Gov. Jim Justice said West Virginia will prioritize vaccinations for school teachers and staff with a goal of resuming classroom learning by Jan. 19, but teachers union leaders are questioning whether the plan is realistic and safe.

The Public Employees Insurance Agency approved a plan for the coming fiscal year that holds premiums steady, but the agency is also looking ahead to the possibility of increased costs for the following year.

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The West Virginia Department of Education says this week they’ll be sending a survey to county superintendents to find out how many teachers and staff members want to take the COVID-19 vaccine.
