Policy 5310 – Evaluation Changes

The state Board of Education again revised the teacher evaluation system in September 2016, when they waived some parts of Policy 5310 (Educator Evaluation).

Board members decided to waive the requirement that 5 percent of a teacher’s evaluation would be based on the schoolwide growth scores in math and reading.

They also reiterated an earlier decision to NOT tie student test scores on the Smarter Balanced to 15 percent of math and English/language arts teachers’ evaluations.

The two student learning goals will now make up 20 percent of an evaluation.

Over time our members have helped to get a more reasonable policy passed by the state board.

Members argued against tying student test scores to teachers’ evaluations. They opposed roster verification and encouraged state board members to wait for passage of the federal Every Student Succeeds Act.

The deadline to convene the year-end conference and complete the summative performance rating is before the last day of school for teachers but not later than June 15.
