WVBE makes Assessment Changes in Science and Social Studies

At the WVBE meeting on February 12, the Board approved waivers to Policy 2430 that would change the current statewide assessments in science and social studies. The motion passed unanimously by the board and is for the 2015 statewide general summative assessment only. It may be extended to other years but would require another vote of the board.

WVEA President Dale addressed the board and spoke in favor of the testing waiver and the delay in the implementation of the A-F school grading system.

The waiver impacts the assessment of science and social studies by requesting that science only be assessed in grades 4, 6 and 10. This complies with federal requirements and aligns to the grades in which science is assessed on the WV alternative summative assessment.

The waiver also provides that the statewide summative assessment of social studies would be discontinued for all grades. The West Virginia Golden Horseshoe exam will continue for grade 8 since it is not part of the summative assessment (Policy 2340).

A-F School Grading to be Delayed

The WVBE also decided to ask for a renewal of the ESEA flexibility waiver due to the transition of our statewide assessments from WESTEST to Smarter Balanced tests. By delaying the implementation of the A-F school grading system until the fall of 2016-2017, this will allow for two years of comparative data to be collected using the same assessment (Smarter Balanced) to measure growth.

Alternative Math Sequences now an Option at High Schools

The WVBE also voted to allow flexibility and local choice in mathematics. Local boards will now have the option to choose one of two course sequence pathways for the mathematics progression in grades 9 –11 starting in the 2015-2016 school year.

•Option 1: The pathway known as the international or integrated course sequence of Math I, Math II and Math III. This is the pathway in the current Policy 2510.

This sequence groups the set of NxG content standards and objectives into three courses which each contain content related to algebra, geometry, trigonometry and data and statistics.

•Option 2: The pathway known as the traditional course sequence of Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II.

This sequence groups the set of NxG content standards and objectives into three courses with all of the algebra content contained in the Algebra I and Algebra II courses, the geometry content contained in the Geometry course, and the content for trigonometry and data and statistics integrated among the three courses.
