WVEA’s 12th annual Professional Issues Conference will be held October 17-18, 2007 at the Marriott Hotel in Charleston, West Virginia. The theme of this year’s conference is “West Virginia’s Public Schools Work.”


The conference will begin with dinner and keynote speaker at 7:00 p.m. on Friday and will conclude at approximately 2:30 p.m. on Saturday. Mr. Chike Akua, an award winning educator and author, will be the keynote speaker on Friday and will conduct a break-out session on Saturday.  Arrangements for speaker/topic for the luncheon on Saturday are ongoing.

Session topics and presenters for Saturday are being finalized. Once confirmed, the complete agenda will be posted (click here for tentative agenda).

 

Deadline for registration is October 3, 2008. All participants must pre-register through the WVEA. Your registration fee will include Friday night lodging (if applicable), dinner on Friday night, lunch on Saturday and all handouts and conference materials. Space will be limited to the first 250 who register. Checks for the conference registration fee must accompany your form in order for room reservations to be made.

Featured Speaker

CHIKE AKUA

Mr. Chike Akua earned his Master of Arts degree in education with a concentration in school counseling from Clark Atlanta University and is a cum laude graduate of Hampton University where he earned a BA degree in education with a concentration in English. Mr. Akua has teaching experience in Virginia and Georgia public school systems. He was selected Teacher of the Year for Newport News Public Schools (VA) and was also selected as one of Ebony magazine’s “50 Leaders of Tomorrow.”  In addition, the Dekalb County (GA) Board of Education recognized him with the Excellence in Education Award for Service to Youth.
    
Deeply committed to the development of culturally relevant instructional materials, Mr. Akua has written and published several books and parent/teacher guides designed for today’s students. His book, A Treasure Within: Stories of Remembrance and Rediscovery, was nominated for the NAACP Image Award. Reading Revolution is his most recent publication.
    
A recognized master teacher, Mr. Akua has been an invited keynote presenter at regional and national conferences. Mr. Akua is frequently called upon by education, civic, and social organizations to speak about educational excellence and cultural knowledge.
