WV school board appealing Nicholas school consolidation order
The West Virginia Board of Education and State Schools Superintendent Steve Paine on Thursday filed a notice of appeal to contest a judge’s order that the state school board approve a Nicholas County public school consolidation plan.
The state board had denied the Nicholas Board of Education’s plan to consolidate schools in Richwood, Craigsville and Summersville into a single campus near Summersville.
The Nicholas board plans to use Federal Emergency Management Agency recovery money from the June 2016 flood, which damaged Richwood Middle, Richwood High and Summersville Middle, to build the consolidated campus. That money could instead rebuild those three schools, whose former buildings have been closed since the flood.
Kanawha County Circuit Court Judge Duke Bloom, who on Aug. 18 reversed the state board’s denial of the consolidation, has a hearing 10 a.m. Tuesday on a request from Paine and the state board for Bloom to stay his own decision, pending the state Supreme Court’s ruling on the appeal.
