Kanawha superintendent proposes consolidating Clendenin, Bridge elementaries

Kanawha County Schools Superintendent Ron Duerring announced Monday that he’s recommending that Kanawha school board members consider consolidating Bridge and Clendenin elementaries into a new school.
Monday’s meeting devolved into acrimony after the announcement, with some attendees in a shouting match with an area parent who said the schools were failing to prepare students for the future.
It’s unclear where the new school could go, particularly because the owner of the currently leading proposed site said he doesn’t want to sell.
The schools, both along the Elk River, were affected by the June 2016 floods that devastated the area.
Clendenin Elementary and Bridge Elementary are about 9 miles apart. Clendenin Elementary’s building has been closed since the floods, and its students have been sharing space with the students at Bridge Elementary.
