SUMMERSVILLE, W.Va. – The Nicholas County Board of Education approved Monday a proposal to consolidate multiple schools into two separate institutions.
The plan, submitted by Nicholas County Schools Superintendent Donna Burge-Tetrick, would merge Nicholas County High and Richwood High schools as well as Nicholas County Career and Technical Center into one high school facility. In addition, Richwood Middle and Summersville Middle schools would combine into one middle school.
Burge-Tetrick previously said decreasing enrollment as well as last June’s flood are reasons for the move. Richwood Middle, Richwood High and Summersville Middle schools were heavily damaged in the flood.
At least one public hearing must be held for each school considered for consolidation. In addition, the system must submit the superintendent’s reasons for this action.
After all public hearings are held, the Nicholas County Board of Education must approve a final plan before presenting the case to the state Board of Education, who will make the final decision.
