WVEA Recommendations for Education Reform

The purpose of this document is to provide the reader with research that supports the reform measures WVEA members believe will improve student performance in our state. WVEA survey data as well as the WV Vital Survey indicate that WV teachers strongly support these initiatives. These items will be presented to the education reform work group.
I. Smaller Class Size
There is a wealth of research that supports smaller class size as a path to improving student performance.
· Smaller classes in grades K-3 improve student achievement in reading and math. Students in smaller classes performed better than students in larger classes on reading and mathematics achievement tests (Mitchell & Mitchell, 1999; Molnar, Smith, & Zahorik, 1999). ...more
