SBA faces $105M in school construction requests, has $51M to distribute

State School Building Authority board members meet Monday in Charleston, hearing presentations from county public school systems on their funding requests for construction and renovation.
State School Building Authority Finance Director Garry Stewart expects the SBA to have about $51 million to distribute to public school construction and renovation projects in this year’s “needs” grant cycle.
But 28 county public school systems have asked for a total of $105 million in SBA funds in this year’s grant cycle, so the SBA board, per usual, will have to turn down some counties’ requests.
Superintendents from about half the counties vying for funds presented to SBA board members and answered their questions Monday, and the other half are scheduled to appear before the board Tuesday.
