Audit: Wayne school system broke policies, faces budget issues

Wayne County’s school board president and its former public schools treasurer are each suggesting the other is trying to deflect scrutiny in the wake of a state Office of Education Performance Audit that says the public school system violated state Board of Education finance policies and saw the cost of its locally funded employees increase more than $1.4 million from the 2014-15 fiscal year to last fiscal year.
The report, which the state school board accepted last week, says the Wayne school system failed to follow state board Policy 1224.1 by failing to do required annual financial audits of all its schools. The OEPA team said the last time schools were audited was 2014, a fact that “compromised” the team’s “ability to verify full compliance.”
